Lizzo took direct aim at body-shamers Thursday after a fat joke about her appearance went viral, posting a pointed message on Instagram asking critics to step back.
The chart-topping singer didn’t hesitate, writing in the caption, “Because when you’re growing up they’re gonna talk shit, when you’re little they’re gonna talk shit. Your body will never be good enough for them because it’s not for them. This is for you.” Finally, she lashed out at her critics: “I’m living like you bitches paying off my mortgage.”
A few weeks ago, she opened up about the serious mental health crisis in a November Substack article.
In the article titled “Why is everyone losing weight and what should we do about it?” ” article, Lizzo revealed that Vash “became extremely suicidal” in late 2023 after a former dancer filed a lawsuit. “I have been the subject of a vicious scandal and feel like the world has turned its back on me,” she wrote.
The lawsuit accuses her of harassment and toxic behavior in the workplace, while a wave of online criticism prompted her to isolate and cut off close relationships.
She said she felt unable to defend herself publicly as she dealt with the legal ramifications. This isn’t the first time Lizzo has faced public scrutiny of his body.

In May 2023, she fired back at a tweet that mocked her weight during a performance, saying the constant judgment made her “hate the world” and considered quitting music entirely.
“I’m not trying to be fat. I’m not trying to be smaller. I’m literally just trying to live and be healthy,” she wrote at the time.
Back in August 2021, after the release of her single “Rumors” with Cardi B, she suffered a breakdown after receiving racist and body-shaming comments on Instagram Live.
Facebook and Instagram removed some of the offensive posts due to the backlash. Cardi B defended her collaborator, writing on Twitter: “Body shaming and calling her mom is mean and racist.”
Lizzo shared her health journey on social media, including achieving a 16% body fat loss through Pilates and dietary changes.
Despite her progress, she faced criticism from both sides, with some attacking her for being “too big” and others accusing her of betraying body positivity by losing weight.
In her Substack post, she explained that her body transformation was about healing, not about meeting beauty standards.
She describes her weight as “a protective shield” and a “happy comfort zone” that she chose to release after years of emotional trauma.
Throughout, Lizzo has advocated for people to accept their bodies, while insisting that decisions about her health are hers.
