West Atlanta rapper/rocker/singer Kenny Mason is back with his latest single. “HOODRAT” is Mason’s latest work, released approximately eight months after his latest album “9.” With 2020’s Angelic Hoodrat and 2021’s Angelic Hoodrat: Supercut, Kenny Mason has earned a reputation as one of the most versatile young artists in hip-hop. He switches between more traditional Atlanta hip-hop and grunge styles with ease. On the latest song, Mason operates more in his rap bag, bringing it back to the artist’s roots.
“HOODRAT” has a spacious beat with a muddy vocal sample, making this song something that Clams Casino would have produced if he were interested in using 808s to make the beat. Kenny Mason’s vocals are more direct and aggressive, contrasting with the background music produced by FearDorian. Mason took the song’s title to heart in the lyrics. He raps about growing up with “hoodrats,” his childhood dreams of making money, and people’s reactions to him living on the streets. Of course, Mason has been concentrating on his music for years, and in the four years since he first released Angelic Hoodrat, he’s had great success. It will be interesting to see if his next album will continue the trend of versatility from his previous work, or if he will choose to stay on one track for releases. Before he announces his next project, stream “HOODRAT” below.
Quoting lyrics:
Grandpa had a heart attack and I have no heart
Whenever aliens discover my art, it becomes an artifact
Whenever my cousin finds my Glock, it comes with a mod
I try to stand out front when you’re around and act like I’m not attached
When I finish singing this song, my account will get a hundred racks
I dreamed about this when I was in seventh grade and they told me not to rap
