Now that everyone knows more about the XXL freshman class of 2024 through interviews, trolls, and ABC, it’s time to see how their talents are showcased in the code. After BigXThaPlug, Bossman Dlow and Maiya The Don struggled in the first code, That Mexican OT, ScarLip, Skilla Baby, Lay Bankz and Cash Cobain got their chance to show off today. Each freshman raps over a beat of pounding bass and ethereal chords produced by Southside, bringing energy to the verses they deliver.
The Mexican pro came straight out of Bay City, Texas, bar in hand, and a dizzying barrage of puns ensued. “H*, stop calling me the number one Latino rapper, asshole/Cause I’m attacking black and white people, not just Mexicans,” OT raps. “‘OT, did you make the XXL list?’ I screamed, ‘Fuck you’/In Texas, you can see me on drugs.
The Bronx’s own ScarLip brings energy and an undeniable emotional connection to the buzzing bar scene. “Don’t show any emotion, growing up we had to fight the tears/bleeding for anyone who might care,” she snapped. “Can’t stop, won’t stop, the finish line is right there/Crawling in their dreams, the pen game gives them nightmares.”
Next up, Skilla Baby heads to the Motor City to deliver hard barbells to the trenches. “I’m with Southside ’cause I know he’s got my back/I’m the richest young man ever to do this without a plaque,” he boasts. “Pushing the record out of the studio, I treated it as my trap/Henry from BMF, and I wouldn’t do anything without my tape.”
BX rapper and producer Cash Cobain joined in next. The co-creators of “Fisherrr” maintained a laid-back vibe and used the opportunity to be flexible. “Walked into the club with that thing (alright) / I went to the club for like a dub (alright),” he rhymes. “Fast women, fast cars within my budget (okay)/And I’m still on the block, bitches love it.”
Lay Bankz brings things full circle. The Philly native shows no sisterly love to her rap foes. “Bursting bubbles and bruised egos/Even though it’s me/Even though it’s my body tea/And bitch Cheetos,” she gushed. “You see these motherfuckers doing a lot of stuff, yeah I started it/party music, no I didn’t create it, I was part of it, part of the evolution.”
